Top five design trends for kitchens in 2017
1. Outdoor Kitchens
More and more homeowners want to have outdoor kitchens. By moving the kitchen outside, the center of a household’s activity is shifted to outside of the home as well, which is something that is becoming increasingly popular. Especially in sunny Los Angeles, where the temperatures are suitable for being outside all-year round, an outside kitchen is a great way to enjoy the outdoors while cooking and eating a delicious meal.
2. Luxury Combined with Technology/Energy Efficiency
Some of the design features that are popular for kitchens include luxury items, and technological/energy efficient items. Among the luxury features we find wine refrigerators, more storage options (such as butler’s pantries, and cabinetry that can be built in), double islands, higher-end kitchen appliances, and appliances that fit under the counter. When it comes to technology and energy-efficient design features, sensor faucets, cooking appliances using induction, recharging stations for electronic devices, filtration systems for drinking water, steam ovens, and in general smart appliances, are most popular.
3. Functionality
Another really popular trend is an increase in storage spaces, particularly in the kitchen. Homeowners are not just thinking about aesthetics anymore when it comes to remodeling a room, but about how much can be stored away within a given space. Increased storage space is being requested in remodeling projects more and more. And what is great about these additional storage spaces is that they are often built so that they look completely hidden most of the time. Only when you open the doors to the storage cabinet or pantry can you see all the things tucked away.
4. Two-Toned Kitchens
Kitchens have traditionally been designed in white or gray hues, and these colors continue to be popular. They provide a very clean and simple look. However, two-toned kitchens are now becoming more desirable. With two-tone design, there are two ways to go: Either use contrasting or complementary colors. For example, you could have the counters in a bright color and the cabinets in a dark color. Two-tone kitchens also take the form of having cabinets where the top portion is painted in one color, and the bottom portion in another. The color of your wall paint can play into this as well; either by using a wall color that complements the cabinets, or a color that contrasts. By using two colors instead of just one dominant color, you can create visual points of interest in your kitchen and help lead the eye to the kitchen’s most appealing features.
5. Wood Over Metal
Wood cabinets are still the most popular option for kitchens. However, more and more homeowners are beginning to opt for metal cabinets. This is definitely a look when you are going for something more modern. These metal cabinets usually come in stainless steel, gold, and black. Copper colors and finishes are gaining in popularity as well, as they add an especially refined look to the kitchen.
